DIRECT TV's Amazing Advertisement

If you are my friend, family, or acquaintance, odds are you are annoyed at how much I talk about DIRECT TV’s ‘Wet Bags: Switch’ commercial. I find myself actually paying attention to commercials now simply in the hopes of reciting the lines of this commercial because I think it is the funniest thing I have ever seen in my nineteen years.
DIRECT TV’s advertisement is persuasive because it’s purpose is to convince the viewers to make the switch to DIRECT TV instead of cable. The commercial is directed towards people with cable TV, stating that DIRECT has been “rated #! In customer satisfaction over cable TV for the last 17 years running”.
This commercial stands out to me because of the humor and sarcasm put into it. The advertisement states that DIRECT TV has been preferred over cable for the past 17 years, but regardless of this statistic some people still chose cable TV. Then the commercial goes on to compare the lovers of cable to unpleasant experiences. Examples of these loathed everyday situations would be the wet underside of your paper grocery bags, spilling coffee on yourself, walking through a turn-style that doesn’t turn, or getting a bad haircut. Clips of these situations are shown but instead of being annoyed or angry at the situation, the experience is followed through with an enthusiastic “Yes!” or hysterical laughter.
This commercial plays worldwide encouraging those with cable networks to switch to DIRECT TV. The advertisement uses subtle hints of ethos buy making the ad funny and relatable to each viewer. Comparing the opposing cable TV to unpleasant experiences in everyday life in a hilarious way makes the viewer enjoy the ad and makes it stand out among so many other commercials attempting to do the same thing.
